A RESOLUTION

Remembering and honoring the life of Mr. William Coleman Hartman, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Georgia has lost one of its most beloved citizens and a legendary figure in University of Georgia football history on March 16, 2006, with the passing of Mr. William "Bill" Coleman Hartman, Jr., of Athens, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, he was born on St. Patrick's Day, 1915, in Thomaston, Georgia, and spent most of his childhood in Madison, Georgia, where he was a halfback for the Madison High School football team; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hartman went on to attend the University of Georgia, where he became one of the school's most celebrated athletes, earning great distinction for his performance as a halfback, fullback, and quarterback on the school's football team, where he was team captain and was All-SEC and All-America as a senior in 1937; and

WHEREAS, after playing one season with the NFL's Washington Redskins, Mr. Hartman returned to Athens in 1939, where he served for several years as a coach for the University of Georgia football team's backfield, helping to cultivate the talents of many of UGA's most renowned players; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hartman later had a successful career in insurance, but continued his involvement with the University of Georgia, serving two terms as president of the University of Georgia alumni society and for several years serving as the unpaid chairman of the Georgia Student Educational Fund, among countless other activities; and

WHEREAS, so respected was he for his immense coaching talents that in the 1970s Head Coach Vince Dooley asked Mr. Hartman to become a volunteer kicking coach, a position that he enthusiastically held until the NCAA abolished volunteer coaches; after that, Mr. Hartman enrolled in graduate school and coached for three more years as a graduate assistant; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hartman enjoyed a loving marriage to the late Ruth Landers, with whom he was blessed to have three children, Laura Hartman Ciucevich, Barbara Hartman Howell, and William Coleman Hartman III; and

WHEREAS, besides his two daughters and son, he is survived by his loving second wife, Mary Hartman, and his six grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, few alumni have contributed as much to the University of Georgia as Mr. Hartman, who will always be remembered with the greatest affection for his loyalty, integrity, aptitude for storytelling, generosity, and kind and loving spirit.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in remembering and honoring the life of Mr. William Coleman Hartman, Jr., and extend their most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Mary Hartman.
