A RESOLUTION

Commending Colonel Robert Lee Izlar on the occasion of his retirement; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, throughout his illustrious career, Colonel Robert Lee Izlar has served the United States Army and the Selective Service System with the utmost professionalism, loyalty, honesty, and integrity, making him an inspiration to all his friends and colleagues; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Izlar, a native of Waycross, Georgia, and a 1967 graduate of Waycross High School, graduated from the 82nd Airborne Division's Reconnaissance Commando School at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, in 1970 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army at the University of Georgia in 1971; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from the Military Police School Officer Basic Course at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, in 1972, he served on active duty with the United States Army in the Republic of Korea from 1972-1973 as Provost Marshall of Camp Howard Korea, Commander of the Eighth Army Sentry Dog Handlers' School, and as Executive Officer of B Company, 728th Military Police Battalion; and

WHEREAS, upon his return from Korea, he served as executive officer of the 298th Military Police Company at Ft. Stewart, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, he received a direct commission from the United States Army Reserve in 1982 and was assigned as a Selective Service System Reserve Joint Forces Officer with the United States Air Force Reserve 2400th Reserve Readiness and Mobilization Squadron in Jackson, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, in 1986, he graduated from the Military Intelligence School Officer Advanced Course at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona; and

WHEREAS, in 1989, he was assigned as Selective Service System Reserve Joint Forces Officer to the United States Army Reserve Detachment 1-19, First United States Army at Naval Air Station Atlanta and graduated with honors from the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; and

WHEREAS, he was appointed as executive officer in Selective Service System United States Army Reserve Joint Forces Element 2-7 at Naval Air Station Atlanta in 1995; and

WHEREAS, named Selective Service System Region II Senior Grade Officer of the Year in 1998, he graduated with honors from the United States Air Force's Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, in 1999; and

WHEREAS, in 2005, Colonel Izlar was appointed commanding officer of Selective Service System United States Army Reserve Joint Forces Element Detachment 2-7 at Naval Air Station Atlanta and Deputy Commander Selective Service System Region II and senior officer liaison to Selective Service System Region II state directors and commanders at Smyrna, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, among his numerous decorations, he has received the Selective Service System's Meritorious Service Medal, the Superior Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit Medal; and

WHEREAS, on November 30, 2005, Colonel Izlar retired from the United States Army Reserve after 30 years of dedicated service to this state and this country.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join to commend Colonel Robert Lee Izlar on his 30 years of extraordinary service to our state and nation, to thank him for his many contributions to Georgia, and to extend their best wishes for a happy and fulfilling retirement.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Colonel Robert Lee Izlar.
