RESOLUTION
Commending
Reverend Thurmond N. Tillman; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
for 24 years, First African Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia, has been
blessed with the leadership of one of Georgia's most respected clergymen,
Reverend Thurmond N. Tillman; and
WHEREAS,
the son of Reverend and Mrs. Eugene C. Tillman, Sr., he was raised in Brunswick,
Georgia, and graduated from Glynn Academy and Brunswick Junior College before
earning his Bachelor of Science from the State University of West Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
in obedience to the call to serve the Lord, Reverend Tillman earned a Master of
Divinity from the Interdenominational Theological Center Morehouse School of
Religion and became licensed to preach the Gospel at Shiloh Baptist Church in
1976; and
WHEREAS,
since becoming the Pastor of First African Baptist Church, Reverend Tillman has
touched countless lives with his spiritual guidance, faithfully guiding his
flock with strength and compassion; and
WHEREAS,
Reverend Tillman devotes his energy not just to his congregation but to
bettering the greater community, and, among his many leadership positions, he is
chairman of the West Broad Street Y.M.C.A., chaplain for the Savannah Police
Department and the Southeastern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, a board
member of the African American Monument Association and Goodwill Industries of
the Coastal Empire, and former chairman of the M. L. King/Montgomery Street
Revitalization Committee of the Savannah Development Renewal Authority;
and
WHEREAS,
also heavily involved within his denomination and in a variety of ecumenical
endeavors, Reverend Tillman is president of the General Missionary Baptist
Convention of Georgia, Congress of Christian Education, vice moderator of the
Berean Missionary Baptist Association, treasurer of the Savannah Baptist
Ministers Union, convener of Hundred Black Churches Connected and 1000 Churches
Connected in the Savannah area, and former president of the Interdenominational
Ministerial Alliance of Chatham County, Georgia, among countless other
activities; and
WHEREAS,
Reverend Tillman is married to the former Lawanda Copeland and is the proud
father of three children, Trenile Nicole, Lauren Christina, and Tremil Delano;
and
WHEREAS,
on April 30, 2006, First African Baptist Church will be celebrating Reverend
Tillman's 24th Pastoral Appreciation.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
commending Reverend Thurmond N. Tillman on his 24 years of outstanding service
to First African Baptist Church and thank him for his many invaluable
contributions to Savannah and to Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Reverend Thurmond N.
Tillman.
