A RESOLUTION

Recognizing Monica Kaufman in honor of Women's History Month; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Monica Kaufman anchors Channel 2 Action News at 5:00, 6:00, and 11:00 P.M., Monday through Friday; and

WHEREAS, she graduated from the University of Louisville and worked as a reporter with The Louisville Times for four years and as a reporter and anchor with WHAS-TV in Louisville for two years before joining WSB-TV in August, 1975; and

WHEREAS, she is a member of various professional organizations, including the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists, and the Atlanta Junior League; and

WHEREAS, in 1992, the Women's Sports Foundation and Miller Lite presented her with the Women's Sports Journalism Award for Local Television Reporting for her investigative report on the Georgia High School Association, which in its 87 years had never had a woman on its executive committee and did not have state-wide competition for girls soccer and cheerleading; and

WHEREAS, she was awarded first place recognition for Excellence in Journalism/Documentary by the Atlanta Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for "Hot Flash! The Truth About Menopaouse" on March 18, 1995; and

WHEREAS, the documentary also won two National Women in Radio and Television Commendation awards in competition with network programs; and

WHEREAS, her distinguished career as a television journalist has been recognized by many other awards, including 23 local and Southern Regional Emmy Awards for talent, reporting, and "Monica Kaufman Closeups"; and
WHEREAS, it is only fitting to recognize Monica Kaufman for her continued contributions to keep Georgians knowledgeable and informed.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize Monica Kaufman and thank her in honor of Women's History Month for her many contributions and service to the people of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Monica Kaufman.
