By: Senator Bulloch of the 11th

A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the contributions of American Indians and the work of the Council on American Indian Concerns; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, long before Europeans ever reached what is now the State of Georgia, thousands of American Indians prospered on this land's fertile soil and productive waterways in complex communities; and

WHEREAS, American Indians are a diverse group with multifaceted systems of government and rich languages, beliefs, and traditions; and

WHEREAS, American Indian tribes such as the Cherokee, Muskogee Creek, Seminole, and Yuchi have lived in Georgia throughout the centuries and have vastly enriched our culture and contributed to our society; and

WHEREAS, more than 57,000 Georgians are American Indians or American Indian descendants; and

WHEREAS, our land's first inhabitants have maintained their traditional values throughout American history, and local, state, and federal governments should strive to help American Indians flourish as a vital political, social, and moral presence; and

WHEREAS, our state and nation must work in partnership with tribal leaders and organizations in order to nurture hope for a greater future for American Indians.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body acknowledge the many contributions American Indians continue to make to our state and appreciate the work of the Council on American Indian Concerns on behalf of our first Georgians.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Council on American Indian Concerns.
