A RESOLUTION

Remembering and honoring the life of Colonel John Chapple Chandler, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Colonel John Chapple "Chap" Chandler, Jr., was born on March 20, 1929, in Millen, Georgia, to John Abner Chapple Chandler and Emmie Harris Chandler; and

WHEREAS, as a youth, he was an Eagle Scout, a three-sport athlete, and a single-wing quarterback of the Class C State Championship Football team at Millen High School before graduating as salutatorian in 1946; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, Colonel Chandler entered the Marine Corps, where he honorably served his country during the Korean War and proudly devoted 37 years of service to the Marine Corps Reserve; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Chandler had an illustrious business career during which he worked for 24 years for Southwire Company, helping to build it into a billion-dollar company, and in 1983 formed Continental Concepts, Inc., with his son, Cary; and

WHEREAS, after a brief retirement, Colonel Chandler joined Duffey Realty in Carrollton, where he became co-owner and managing broker; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Chandler was always a highly active member of his community and was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Marine Corps Retired Officers Association, a past board member of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, and a past president of Sunset Hills Country Club; he also had served as director of Hancock County Bank in Hawesville, Kentucky for more than 30 years; and

WHEREAS, a devout Christian, Colonel Chandler was a member of Carrollton First United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Believers Class and was past president and song leader of the Men's Bible Class; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Chandler leaves behind a loving and devoted family, including his wife of 51 years, Mary Miller Chandler; his sons John Chapple Chandler III, and Cary Scott Chandler, Sr.; his sister, Emily Chandler Adams; and several adored grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Georgia lost a most estimable citizen on February 17, 2006, with the passing of Colonel John Chapple Chandler, Jr.;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body remember and honor the extraordinary life of Colonel John Chapple Chandler, Jr., and extend their most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Mary Miller Chandler.
