A RESOLUTION

Honoring Dr. Samuel Williams, Sr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel Williams, Sr. is a distinguished spiritual leader and retired college professor in the City of Savannah; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Williams received his Doctor of Ministry from Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, in 1983; his certificate of Clinical Pastoral Education from Georgia Regional Hospital, Savannah, Georgia, June 1972; his Masters of Divinity degree from Howard University, School of Religion in Washington, D.C., in 1969; his Bachelor of Divinity from Howard University School of Religion in 1965; and his Bachelor of Science degree from Savannah State College in 1962; and

WHEREAS, he was born in Midville, Georgia, to the late Reverend Linyon L. Williams, Sr., and Cora B. Williams and was licensed to preach at the Second African Baptist Church, Savannah, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Williams is currently retired from Savannah State University after more than 30 years where he served as Dean of Men and College Minister, Instructor, Assistant Director of Financial Aid, Acting Vice President of Student Affairs, and Assistant Director of Student Affairs; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Williams, who has preached internationally, is pastor of the Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Savannah; Treasurer of the Savannah Association of the Blind; member of the Board of Directors for Community and Schools; and is the President of the Savannah Baptist Ministers Union; and

WHEREAS, he has published a book entitled Understanding Covenant and Biblical Theology in the Black Church; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Williams has been selected as a Merrill Fellow at the Harvard Divinity School for the Fall Semester, 2004; and

WHEREAS, he is married to the former Claudia J. Quarterman of Savannah and they have two children.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor and commend Dr. Samuel Williams, Sr., for his many years of dedicated service and significant contributions to the City of Savannah and to the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Samuel Williams, Sr.
