A
RESOLUTION
Urging
the Governor to continue his pursuit of the National Bio and Agro-Defense
Facility for Georgia and expressing the House's support of his efforts; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
a national research facility that could fight pandemics such as bird flu, combat
bioterrorism, and provide hundreds of high-paying jobs has been proposed on the
national level; and
WHEREAS,
in these uncertain times of global terrorism, it is essential that our nation
have such a facility as part of the Department of Homeland Security;
and
WHEREAS,
the facility would bring 1,000 construction jobs, house 450 federal workers, and
have at least a $3 billion economic impact on the region; and
WHEREAS,
the location of this facility here would cement Georgia's role as a national and
world leader in this highly competitive field; and
WHEREAS,
the new facility's responsibilities would include study of animal diseases
foreign to the United States, transmission of disease between animals and
humans, vaccine development, and safety of the American food
supply.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body urge the Governor to continue his pursuit of the National Bio and
Agro-Defense Facility for Georgia and express their support of his
efforts.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Governor
and to each member of the Georgia congressional delegation.
