RESOLUTION
Commending
Ambassador Alexandros P. Mallias of Greece; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
as the Greek Ambassador to the United States, the Honorable Alexandros P.
Mallias has been committed to maintaining and strengthening the friendship
between our two nations; and
WHEREAS,
Ambassador Mallias obtained his B.Sc. in economics from the Faculty of
Economics, University of Athens and studied political science at the University
of Geneva from 1972 to 1976; he also holds a post-graduate certificate from the
Institut des Hautes Etudes Europeennes; and
WHEREAS,
in 1970, he joined the Information Center for the European Union in Athens as a
public affairs officer, thus embarking on a remarkable international relations
career that would take him to a variety of locales, from Tripoli, where he
served in the Embassy of Greece from 1982 to 1984, to New York City, where he
served as first counselor for political affairs for the Permanent Mission of
Greece to the United Nations from 1989 to 1993; and
WHEREAS,
during the course of his illustrious diplomatic career, Ambassador Mallias has
held many prominent positions; among his more recent assignments, he was
appointed as Ambassador to Albania in 1999 and served as director of the A3
South Eastern Europe (Balkan Affairs) Department from 2000 to 2005, as national
coordinator at the Stability Pact for Southeastern Europe from 2002 to 2003, and
as chairman of the Coordinating Committee for the Greek EU Presidency's program
for the Balkans; and
WHEREAS,
a world renowned expert on southeastern European affairs, he has worked with
such think tanks as the Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy in
Athens and the Project on Ethnic Relations at Princeton University; and
WHEREAS,
Ambassador Mallias continues his longstanding record of outstanding service on
behalf of his country as head of the Embassy of Greece in Washington, D.C.,
where he dedicates his immense knowledge and diplomatic talents to furthering
Hellenic-American relations.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in commending Ambassador Alexandros P. Mallias on his numerous
career accomplishments and thank him for his work to maintain our two nations'
important alliance.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ambassador
Alexandros P. Mallias.
