A RESOLUTION

Recognizing February 3, 2005, as Go Red for Women Day; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women in Georgia, accounting for 42 percent of all female deaths in the state; and

WHEREAS, more than 13,000 women die from cardiovascular disease in Georgia each year; and

WHEREAS, there are more cardiovascular disease deaths in females than males both nationwide and in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of over 500,000 women annually in the United States, and strokes claim the lives of over 100,000 women; and

WHEREAS, one in three women dies of heart disease; and

WHEREAS, one in five females has some form of heart or blood vessel disease; and

WHEREAS, only about a third of women know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women; and

WHEREAS, women over age 55 are at a higher risk for high blood pressure than men; and

WHEREAS, all women should ask their doctors about their risk for heart disease and stroke; and

WHEREAS, the American Heart Association invites women to take charge of their heart health, make it a top priority, and live a stronger, longer life through their "Go Red for Women" campaign.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize February 3, 2005, as Go Red for Women Day in honor of all the women – our wives, mothers, and daughters – in Georgia that have been touched by heart disease or stroke.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the American Heart Association.
