A RESOLUTION

Remembering and honoring the life of the Honorable John V. Harper; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on May 13, 1959, in Sumter County, John V. Harper was born the beloved son of William Madison Harper III and Willie Simmons Harper; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University, he demonstrated his excellent legal expertise with the firm Ellis, Easterlin, Peagler, and Gatewood and, in 1996, started his own practice, Harper and Barnes, which quickly became a highly respected and successful firm; and

WHEREAS, in 2000, motivated by his sincere dedication to the citizens of his community, he became a Superior Court judge, an office in which he served with great pride, intelligence, and energy; and

WHEREAS, he was devoted to his wife, Mrs. Amzie DeVaughn Harper, and his two wonderful children, Michael and Amanda, who brought such joy to his life; and

WHEREAS, a member of Kappa Sigma Kappa Chapter, the Kiwanis Club, and the First Presbyterian Church in Americus, he was a highly regarded and active community leader who will be greatly missed in his native Sumter County; and

WHEREAS, with the passing of Judge John V. Harper, the State of Georgia has lost a distinguished public servant.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in expressing their deepest regret and sorrow at the passing of the Honorable John V. Harper and extend their most sincere condolences to his family and the Sumter County community.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Amzie DeVaughn Harper and to Chief Judge Rucker Smith and Judge George Peagler, Southwestern Judicial Circuit, to be displayed at their discretion in the Sumter County Courthouse.
