A RESOLUTION

Remembering and honoring the life of James Frank Myers, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, James Frank Myers, Jr. was born on June 21, 1920, in Plains, Georgia, to devoted parents, James Frank Myers and Mary Girvan Myers Dupree; and

WHEREAS, graduating as valedictorian of his class from Anthony School, he demonstrated early in life that intelligence and integrity that would later mark his career as a highly esteemed lawyer in Americus, Georgia, and as a mentor who shaped many young lawyers into outstanding community leaders; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Myers returned from World War II, where he served with honor and courage, and was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, earning a reputation as a spirited debater and a champion of reform; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Myers went on to serve as Mayor of Americus and will be remembered as an honest and progressive public servant whose leadership helped to save the school district in the 1970s; and

WHEREAS, being the founder of The Sumter Free Press, a Sunday School teacher at the First Baptist Church in Americus, and a community leader active in numerous civic organizations, Mr. Myers made many meaningful and lasting contributions to his community; and

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia lost a most estimable citizen and beloved public servant on January 3, 2005, with the passing of Mr. James Frank Myers.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mr. James Frank Myers, Jr. and extend their most sincere condolences to his family and the community of Americus and Sumter County, Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. James Frank Myers, Jr. and the Mayor and Council of the City of Americus, Georgia.
