A dozen bills were on the House calendar yesterday and one of those promises to be a big boost for one of Georgia’s main industries … tourism. What the bill does is establish a State-Wide Tourism Marketing Board comprised of various officials from state agencies which have a hand in tourist related concerns. The goal is to develop a statewide plan to coordinate and promote tourism across the state.

Proponents of the plan say that tourism promotion is not as focused as it can be and creation of the board will go a long way to direct the state’s efforts … including advertising … in the best possible way for all of Georgia’s communities.

Also passed was a measure which allows inter-state cooperation between municipalities and counties which share borders and need to work together. While many cities and counties are already doing this, it was necessary to put actual language in the code which formally allows the practice.

Another measure which puts governments on the same page was House Bill 467 which sets a uniform grading system for the health rating of restaurants and other food service establishments. A uniform method will eliminate any confusion about what the ratings mean.
