Thursday, March 17, 2005 Legislative Day # 34

Legislation approved by the House will send to voters this question:

Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to provide that the tradition of fishing and hunting and the taking of fish and wildlife shall be preserved for the people and shall be managed by law and regulation for the public good?

The state’s citizens will be able to say yea or ney to the referendum when it appears on their ballots in November.

Also passed was a measure creating a joint House/Senate Future of Georgia Forestry Study Committee.

Forestry is the state’s major land use, creates 136,000 jobs, and contributes a twenty point two billion dollar economic impact for the state.

Timber is Georgia’s highest value cash crop and Senate Resolution 54 was adopted in recognition of the need for improved research, development and marketing of this important resources.

Failing to win passage yesterday was a bill which would have broadened the classification of sparklers that are legal in Georgia. Opponents argued that the various kinds of fireworks provided for in the bill are dangerous.
