After a long day, lawmakers debated and passed a long anticipated immigration law overhaul. Senate Bill 529 would provide a code of ethics for providers of immigration assistance services to follow. Ensuring that customers understand that they are not licensed attorneys able to practice law or give legal advice. Also, the bill states that any person seeking public benefits must provide proof of legal residency. Certain services will still be available to undocumented immigrants such as immunizations, pre-natal care, disaster relief, and emergency health care. The bill also cracks down on human trafficking of illegal immigrants that are brought to Georgia and forced to engage in sexually explicit conduct or labor servitude. Other provisions of the bill will impose a five percent charge on wire transfers for those who cannot provide proof of legal US residency. And finally, the bill grants jail keepers the right to assess the immigration status of felons already in jail. Also passed were numerous other measures including one that aims to improve the Quality Basic Education Act.
