Wednesday, March 1, 2006 Legislative Day # 25

After a lengthy debate, the House yesterday passed a bill which authorizes optometrists to prescribe antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals.  Proponents argued that broadening optometric scope of practice will help reduce the cost of overall eye health care.

Also on the docket was a measure which amends various code provisions, which currently refer to “he”, gender neutral.

Additionally legislation was passed which updates guidelines governing the qualifications of audiologists and speech pathologists.

House members also quickly approved adding 10 additional motor cycle troopers to patrol the interstates inside Atlanta’s perimeter. The action was taken because motorcycles are one of the best ways to patrol Atlanta’s frequently congested highways.

Requiring lobbyists to pay a small registration fee and regulation of automobile clubs also received yea votes during what was a busy and productive day.
