| Tuesday, February 28, 2006 - Legislative Day # 24 | |
The 24th legislative day saw numerous measures aimed at reaching out to others adopting legislation ranging from tax holidays to health clinics to honoring one of their own. Health clinics that provide free services to uninsured Georgians were recognized yesterday. House Bill 1272 provided these clinics a sales tax exemption for supplies and services they purchase. Lawmakers wanted to extend to these clinics the same helping hand which they provide to others. Also on everyone’s hearts and minds was former Capitol Post Office Postmaster Wiley T. Nixon. Recognizing his hard work and dedication, the Capitol Post Office was renamed in his honor with House Resolution 1395, a resolution with the maximum 180 co-sponsors. Lawmakers then looked forward to the weekend of August 3rd through 6th declaring that weekend a sales and energy star tax holiday. The extension combines the school sales tax holiday which allows for state sales tax exemptions on school supplies, clothing, footwear, and computer tools up to specified amounts with the energy star tax holiday authorizing tax free purchases of energy efficient items up to 1500 dollars for personal non-commercial use. The measure will simplify book-keeping for retail stores, the department of revenue, and consumers by combining the holidays; a total revenue consumer savings of 11.28 billion dollars state wide is the expected result of the action. I’m Representative ____________ reporting from the state capitol. |
