Today on the floor, legislators were busy passing numerous measures to better the quality of life for children and protection of the environment. Lawmakers moved swiftly through several bills today. House Bill 1241 will allow high schools students to join state All Star games while preserving their spot in sport activities at the their home schools. House Bill 1236 also got a nod and will allow Georgians who own a second home and keep a car there, to register their car at that location. This will lessen the transportation costs and hassles involved when registering vehicles. Additionally, legislators passed the state’s version of the federal Child’s Internet Protection Act. This piece of legislation mirrors its federal predecessor in protecting children and young people from internet pornography. 100% of school districts are already in compliance with the federal mandate; however, legislation was needed at the state level where schools receive the majority of funding. Floor action moved quickly to another measure which would institute a gradual phase out of the gasoline additive MTBE. The state acted to ban the additive due to its harmful effects on the environment. MTBE degrades slowly in nature and also binds itself with water to make disintegration a longer process.
