Representative Scheid Gives 3rd Graders a First Hand Look at Being a Legislator

ATLANTA— During the recent Special Session of the Georgia General Assembly, Representative Chuck Scheid (R-Woodstock) had a very special group of visitors, Holly Carter’s class of third graders from Johnston Elementary School.

The class has been studying Georgia history, and wanted to learn more about Georgia’s government, the Special Session gave them a perfect opportunity to get a first hand look. These eager elementary schoolers observed the activities taking place on the House floor via video stream while also taking in life under the Gold Dome. Throughout the debate, the class sent instant messages to Representative Scheid to inquire about floor happenings.

Their teacher reported that the students found everything so captivating that they skipped lunch so they could continue watching the debate. “I think it’s great that there is such an interest in the legislative process at such a young age. It’s refreshing to see third graders taking an interest in their state government, I hope to see more young people here doing the same,” Representative Scheid commented.

Representative Scheid has made plans to speak to the class further at their school on Tuesday September 12, 2005 to discuss Georgia government and the anniversary of the state constitution.
