Representative Calvin Smyre was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1974. He serves the 132 House District in Columbus. Rep. Smyre is currently serving on the House Appropriations, Higher Education, and the Rules Committees in the 148 th General Assembly.

Born in Chattahoochee County, Rep. Smyre earned his B.S. degree in Business Administration from Ft. Valley State University, where he is a Past President of its National Alumni Association. He now serves as Chairman of the Ft. Valley State University, and also sits on the Board of Trustees for Atlanta University School of Social Work. Before joining the House, he joined the United States Army in 1970.

With an historic career in Georgia politics, Rep. Smyre is one of Georgia’s most notable members of the Democratic Party. In 1986, he was selected by then Governor Harris to be an Administration Floor Leader. In 1984, he was elected to the Democratic National Committee.

The education of Georgia’s best and brightest is the cornerstone of his civic and social activities. Not only does Rep. Smyre sit on his alma mater’s Board, he also sits on the Boards of Atlanta University School of Social Work, Jack D. Hughston Foundation, Medical College of Georgia Foundation, and the Morehouse School of Medicine.
