Vice Chairman Appropriations – Education

HD 46 (R-Alpharetta)

Representative Jan Jones certainly made herself known as a freshman legislator, and already shows signs of doing the same in her second term. During both the first and second sessions of her freshman term, she authored and passed legislation. She has already been appointed Vice Chair of the Education Subcommittee of Appropriations. She will also serve as Secretary of the Reapportionment Committee and is a member of the Environment and Natural Resources and Education Committees as well.

Chairman Jones has worked relentlessly to fight for better educational standards and practices. In fact, the School State Superintendent personally recognized her for her leadership and her effectiveness on educational issues last year. Representative Jones was invited to join the Superintendent and her staff on a British government sponsored trip to London where they discussed the educational funding and practices. Her work on the 2004 Education Amendment assuring the third grade retention policy was a major Republican victory. She continues to support and lobby for the state’s Hope Grant Scholarship Program.

This term will mark the second time that Representative Jones has served on the Environmental and Natural Resources Committee. During her last term in office, she was the only freshman legislator to be appointed by the Governor to the Land Conservation Partnership, a major policy council. She played a crucial role in the formation of the Northern Arc Greenway Trail, an organization focused on trying to develop the area that had once been selected for the proposed Northern Arc.

Outside the legislature, Representative Jones is a former marketing executive. While at HBO she served as a marketing director for 6 years and as an auditor and analyst for 2 years. She founded and co-owned 2 childcare agencies and was a reporter for 2 more years. Representative Jones is married to Attorney Kalin Jones and the couple has 4 children: Tramell age 17; Peyton age 15; Shelby age 12; and Griffin age 9. They also have a Labrador named Hotshot. During sessions, Chairman Jones’ mother moves in to help her out with daily goings on of a household. The family attends Northpoint Community Church.

Representative Jones was born in Warner Robbins and later attended the University of Georgia where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and English. At Georgia State University, she achieved an MBA in Finance. “I want to make a tangible positive difference in my constituents’ lives. I’ll extend that passion into creating positive change in Georgia. I’m here to get things done.”
