HD 119 (R-Augusta)

Known as Representative “Cheese head” to her close fellow legislators, the avid Green Bay Packers fan is currently serving her third term as a State Legislator. The Wisconsin native and self-proclaimed football addict is a first generation American. Representative Burmeister’s father actually immigrated to the United States from Finland. She grew up on a farm in Wisconsin, and attended the University of Wisconsin majoring in Business.

She and her husband Bill left Wisconsin and relocated to Augusta Georgia 21 years ago. Bill is the manager of Engineering at Plant Vogtle, a nuclear power plant located just outside of Augusta. The couple was blessed with 2 sons, and later adopted their 2 daughters from Russia about 9 years ago. Their family is quite outdoorsy. They have owned horses in the past and now very much enjoy hiking in the mountains. In fact, Representative Burmeister used to be quite active in the down-hill skiing racing circuit!

The representative and her family are Lutherans, and very active in their church. She is an active participant of Lay Assistance, which involves assisting the Pastor during Church services. She also teaches Sunday school and enjoys singing in the choir when she is able.

Being a mother of 4 led her to become very active in the PTA and the legislative affairs surrounding it. Her involvement went all the way to the State level, aiding her decision to run for office. She was recently appointed to the honorable position of Secretary/Treasurer for the Majority Caucus. Speaker of the House Glenn Richardson has named her Secretary of the Special Committee on Civil Justice Reform. She also holds membership on several other House committees: Rules, for which she is Vice Chair; Health and Human Services, for which she serves on the sub-committee of Mental Health as well; Appropriations and Government Affairs.
