Summary
“Making the Net Safe for Children”
This presentation will provide an overview of emerging technologies used to combat Internet crimes against children. With emerging technologies (e.g., videophones), the dangers to children increase: commercial exploitation, exposure to inappropriate materials, abductions, harassment, bullying, identity theft, cheating, and others. A partnership of the Georgia Tech Research Institute, GA Dept of Ed, GBI, and GEMA is working to build a comprehensive approach using not only technology, but prevention curriculum for students, teachers and parents. We will go online into a public chat room to demonstrate just how quickly children may be approached with indecent content and propositions from strangers lurking in cyberspace.
WARNING: We will likely encounter potentially offensive language and images in the online chat demonstration.
Presenter: Dara O’Neil of the Georgia Tech Research Institute and member of the NetSafe project team
