A
RESOLUTION
Urging
electric utilities to consider building new nuclear power plants in Georgia;
urging the Public Service Commission to encourage such consideration; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
virtually all new power plants built in Georgia in the last 15 years are fueled
by natural gas, exposing electricity consumers to punishing price volatility;
and
WHEREAS,
nuclear power plants produce electricity at a stable price at high levels of
safety and reliability, while emitting no greenhouse or acid rain gases;
and
WHEREAS,
the United States Congress passed the 2005 Energy Bill that provides a number of
incentives encouraging electric utilities to pursue nuclear energy to reduce
dependence on energy supplies from unstable parts of the world.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body urge
electric utilities in Georgia to study the feasibility of building new nuclear
power plants to serve the state's electricity customers.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Public Service Commission is urged to take
appropriate measures (1) to encourage Georgia utilities to consider building
nuclear power plants and (2) to encourage utilities to take reasonable steps to
maintain the nuclear generation option in Georgia.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Georgia electric utilities
and to each member of the Georgia Public Service Commission.
