Senate Resolution 789
By: Senators Stephens of the 27th and Pearson of the 51st

ADOPTED SENATE

A RESOLUTION

Urging the Department of Community Health and the Health Strategies Council to revise Perinatal (Obstetric/Newborn Level 1) Service Area 3 to include Forsyth County; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, service areas have been established as a part of the state health plan for the purposes of issuing certificates of need and for providing health care throughout the state of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the Perinatal (Obstetric/Newborn Level 1) Service Area 3 includes Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, and Rockdale counties; and

WHEREAS, this service area accounts for almost one-half of the resident live births in the state annually and has within its boundaries some of the best health care facilities for perinatal care; and

WHEREAS, there is anecdotal information that suggests that women that reside in certain service areas are required to travel distances of up to one hour to access health care facilities for perinatal care; and

WHEREAS, it would be beneficial for women who live in Forsyth County to be able to access perinatal health care facilities in the Metro Atlanta area.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the Department of Community Health and the Health Strategies Council are hereby strongly urged to revise Perinatal (Obstetric/Newborn Level 1) Service Area 3 to include Forsyth County.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the commissioner of the Department of Community Health and the chairperson of the Health Strategies Council.
