A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life and achievements of Mrs. Coretta Scott King and expressing regret of her passing; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, our nation remains strong because the fires which forge her burn ever bright and temper her people into steel of incredible strength and willpower; and

WHEREAS, perhaps no other woman of the past century exemplifies and stands as a shining example of that strength than Mrs. Coretta Scott King; and

WHEREAS, she was the founding president and chief executive officer of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, she shared her husband's steadfast commitment to seek peace and justice through nonviolent action and played a leading role in advocating social change across the nation and throughout the world during his lifetime and thereafter and was to be a prominent voice in maintaining the enduring legacy of her husband's dreams; and

WHEREAS, she led good-will missions to a number of Latin American and African nations and addressed two of history's most massive peace rallies in Bonn, Germany, and in New York; and

WHEREAS, her untiring efforts were directly responsible for developing the Center for Nonviolent Social Change and the Freedom Hall Complex into world renowned facilities promoting Dr. King's philosophy through seminars, workshops, and training programs; and

WHEREAS, in 1983, she led the mobilization efforts for the 20th anniversary march on Washington, D.C., bringing together over 800 human rights organizations to form the Coalition of Conscience; and

WHEREAS, she was elected chairperson of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Federal Holiday Commission which was established by an Act of Congress to formalize plans for the first legal holiday in honor of Dr. King; and

WHEREAS, her untiring efforts led to the formal federal establishment of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Historic District and National Historic Site; and

WHEREAS, on January 31, 2006, the State of Georgia lost one of its finest and most distinguished citizens in the passing of Mrs. Coretta Scott King; and

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of this monumental stateswoman whose steadfast leadership and great personal strength guided the citizens of this state through trying times with great dignity and moral integrity.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join to honor the life and achievements of Mrs. Coretta Scott King; commend her extraordinary dedication to protecting and improving the quality of life of her fellow citizens and her lifetime of unsurpassed dedication to the principles of freedom and justice for all; express their deepest regret at her passing; and extend their most sincere condolences to her family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mrs. Coretta Scott King.
