A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the year of 2006 as the 75th Anniversary Celebration of Georgia's State Parks and Historic Sites; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, 2006 marks the 75th anniversary of the Georgia's State Parks and Historic Sites system, which began with the founding of Indian Springs State Park and Vogel State Park in 1931; and

WHEREAS, for 75 memorable years, Georgia's state parks system, one of the oldest park systems in the United States, has been protecting our natural, cultural, and recreational resources for generations to come; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is marking this special milestone with a year-long 75th anniversary celebration, with the goal of increasing awareness and appreciation of the Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites Division; and

WHEREAS, with the support of sponsors including the Georgia Power Company, the Coca-Cola Company, Friends of Georgia State Parks, and Georgia Public Broadcasting, the 75th anniversary celebration will highlight the accomplishments and future challenges of the state parks system, with each of the 63 state parks and historic sites hosting commemorative programs; and

WHEREAS, Georgia Public Broadcasting will showcase our state park system with a one-hour documentary, Sites to Behold: A History of Georgia's State Parks & Historic Sites, scheduled to premiere during its summer pledge drive; and

WHEREAS, by protecting our state's finest natural and cultural treasures, Georgia's State Parks and Historic Sites have been enriching the lives of Georgia's citizens and visitors for 75 glorious years, and this anniversary year is the perfect occasion to celebrate all their wonderful accomplishments of the past and the promising opportunities of the future.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in recognizing the year of 2006 as the 75th Anniversary Celebration of Georgia's State Parks and Historic Sites and in expressing their congratulations and best wishes to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' board and staff.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
