Resolution 708
By:
Senators Starr of the 44th, Douglas of the 17th and Jones of the 10th
A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
Colonel (Retired) Charles Scott, of Jonesboro, in Henry County, Georgia, former
military
attaché
who was taken hostage along with 51 other Americans at the U.S. Embassy in
Tehran, Iran, on November 4, 1979, and released 25 years ago on January 20,
1981; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Colonel Charles Scott and his fellow hostages were kidnapped and brutally
tortured in
Irańs
worst prisons for 444 days; while day after day, militant fundamentalists
outside the embassy vilified the United States as "The Great Satan," chanting
"Death to America," which citizens of the most powerful nation in the world
watched on television; and
WHEREAS,
Colonel Scott and his fellow hostages endured physical and mental hardships such
as mock firing squads and were tried by the International Court of Justice,
which ordered their release, a decision rejected by their military
fundamentalist captors; and
WHEREAS,
the taking and torture of prisoners at the embassy afforded Americans an
understanding of the nature and aims of a tyrannical and oppressive regime;
and
WHEREAS,
the release of the American hostages led to a regeneration, a transformation of
the American spirit, and offered citizens a new perspective on the meaning of
freedom; and
WHEREAS,
Colonel Scott became a top authority on the Middle East and a military
intelligence expert and served his country with singular distinction during 31
years of military service in the United States Army, upholding the time honored
values of "Duty, Honor, and Country."
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body recognizes Colonel Scott
and honors him in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Hostage Freedom
Day.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body recognizes the heroic acts of Colonel Scott
and others who never wavered in their defense of the United States and its
principles and returned to a grateful nation.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of this body support the efforts of all its
military men and women as they defend our freedom every day around the world in
conditions often incomprehensible and unspeakably difficult.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Colonel Charles Scott.
