RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring the life of Mrs. Mildred Ruth Dixon Passmore; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Mildred Ruth Dixon Passmore was born in Cordele, Georgia, and lived in
Savannah most of her life; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Passmore enjoyed a loving marriage to the late Mr. Alvin Passmore, whom she
wed on May 5, 1945, in Zebulon, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
on September 7, 1955, Mrs. Passmore began working as a School Crossing Guard for
the City of Savannah, becoming one of the first five black women to work as
crossing guards for Savannah Public Schools, a group known as the "Fabulous
Five"; and
WHEREAS,
working as the crossing guard for Robert W. Gadsden Elementary School, Mrs.
Passmore was responsible for the safety of hundreds of children and faithfully
served in this position for 22 years until her retirement in 1977;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Passmore was very active during the initial phase of the civil rights
movement in Savannah, becoming a member of the NAACP and marching the streets of
Savannah with the likes of Mr. W. W. Law and other prominent civil rights
leaders; and
WHEREAS,
she was very involved in the P.T.A. of Gadsden Elementary School, serving as its
first president, and was a faithful member of Thankful Missionary Baptist
Church; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Passmore was preceded in death by her husband and by her beloved sons Alvin
Gene Passmore and Wendell Bruce Passmore, and she is survived by a loving and
devoted family, including one son, Ralph N. Passmore; three daughters, Brenda F.
Smart, Catherine R. Denny, and Gwendolyn P. Sheppard; two sisters, Gladys L.
Quarterman and Dorothy Gray Payne; eight grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, the State of Georgia lost a most estimable citizen on January 15, 2006, with the passing of Mrs. Mildred Ruth Dixon Passmore.

NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join
together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mrs. Mildred Ruth
Dixon Passmore and extend their most sincere condolences to her
family.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mrs.
Passmore.
