A RESOLUTION

Commending Saint Joseph's Hospital on 125 years of excellence in health care and recognizing March 8, 2005, as "Saint Joseph's Hospital Day"; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, when four determined Sisters of Mercy opened the doors of Atlanta Hospital on April 21, 1880, they had ten patient beds, 50 cents operating capital, and the distinction of opening the city's first permanent hospital; and

WHEREAS, the Sisters of Mercy never turned away a patient who was unable to pay nor treated them with less compassion or respect, and today's Saint Joseph's Hospital continues this long tradition of providing excellence in patient care without regard to race, class, or religion; and

WHEREAS, Saint Joseph's Hospital has continued its visionary work as the first hospital in the Southeast to perform open heart surgery, to develop a comprehensive cardiac catherization lab, and to open a pacemaker clinic and the first in Atlanta to offer a coronary care unit, to perform a coronary angiogram, and to open an intensive care unit; and

WHEREAS, these medical advancements have earned Saint Joseph's the highest regard throughout the nation and a reputation as a leader in coronary and vascular care; and

WHEREAS, once again recognizing the needs of its community, Saint Joseph's opened the School of Nursing in 1900, which became the first accredited nursing school in Georgia and graduated 1,320 nurses over its 73 years; and today the hospital counts the Magnet Recognition for Excellence in Nursing Service as one of its many awards and honors, and

WHEREAS, in their daily duties, the physicians, nurses, staff, and volunteers of Saint Joseph's contribute in countless ways to the care and comfort of patients and their families; and

WHEREAS, 125 years later, the citizens of Atlanta look back with pride and gratitude at the long and distinguished history of Saint Joseph's Hospital and with great anticipation at the promise of its future achievements.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in recognizing March 8, 2005, as "Saint Joseph's Hospital Day," and, on the occasion of its 125th anniversary, express their sincere thanks and commendation for the excellent health care and compassion the hospital provides to the citizens of the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Saint Joseph's Hospital.
