A RESOLUTION

Remembering and honoring the life of the Honorable John V. Harper; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, John V. Harper was born May 13, 1959, in Sumter County to loving parents William Madison Harper III and Willie Simmons Harper; and

WHEREAS, he graduated from Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in 1986 and joined the firm of Ellis, Easterlin, Peagler, and Gatewood where his outstanding legal ability was quickly noticed; and

WHEREAS, in 1996, he started his own practice, Harper and Barnes, which became a much admired and respected firm; and

WHEREAS, he was elected as Superior Court judge in 2000 and carried out the duties of this position with great zeal and dedication to the community he loved; and

WHEREAS, his strength of character shone in every aspect of his life, as an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Americus where he served as a deacon and an elder, a devoted husband to Mrs. Amzie DeVaughn Harper, an outstanding father to his two children, Michael and Amanda, and a beloved son and brother; and

WHEREAS, with the passing of the Honorable John V. Harper on December 19, 2004, the State of Georgia has lost a most esteemed public servant.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in expressing their deepest regret and sorrow at the untimely passing of the Honorable John V. Harper and extend their sincere condolences to his family and the Sumter County community.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Mrs. Amzie DeVaughn Harper and to Chief Judge Rucker Smith and Judge George Peagler, Southwestern Judicial Circuit, to be displayed at their discretion in the Sumter County Courthouse.
