Senate Resolution 62

A RESOLUTION

Commending Keep Georgia Beautiful; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, litter and blighted neighborhoods leave a negative impression that affects tourism and economic development and results in higher incidents of crime; and

WHEREAS, litter is not just an aesthetic problem but also affects the safety and quality of
life of Georgians and the environment; and

WHEREAS, litter that is irresponsibly dropped along roadways or on the land is often washed into storm water systems and ultimately ends up in Georgia streams, rivers, and lakes, thus negatively impacting water quality; and

WHEREAS, Keep America Beautiful affiliates now covering over 75 percent of the population of Georgia have been highly successful in getting citizens and corporate partners involved in their communities by volunteering their time and resources for cleanup efforts; and

WHEREAS, Keep America Beautiful affiliates have forged highly successful partnerships to support their programs, resulting in over $12.00 of benefit for every dollar of public funds invested in their programs; and

WHEREAS, Georgia Keep America Beautiful affiliates benefit from programs offered by Keep Georgia Beautiful, which has been able to leverage an additional 92¢ in corporate support for every dollar it received from the Solid Waste Trust Fund; and

WHEREAS, in 2004, over 40,000 volunteers cleaned up over 5,000 roadway miles and 300 illegal dumps during Georgia´s Great American Cleanup efforts.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Keep Georgia Beautiful for its unparalleled achievements in all areas and extend their sincerest best wishes for continued success in the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Keep Georgia Beautiful.
