A
RESOLUTION
Commending
Dr. Michael A. Battle; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Michael A. Battle, the seventh president of the Interdenominational
Theological Center (ITC), is a rare combination of a theologically well-trained
educator, a spirit-led servant leader, and a preacher who addresses the needs of
the 21st century; and
WHEREAS,
with a bachelor's degree from Trinity College, a master of divinity degree from
Duke University, and a doctor of ministry degree from Howard University, Dr.
Battle has served as an administrator to some of the nation's finest
institutions of higher education, as vice president of the American Committee on
Africa from 1994 to 1998, as an election observer in 1994 for the first free
election in South Africa, and as a liaison between the Hampton University
Ministers' Conference and the South African Council of Churches;
and
WHEREAS,
he served his country with pride and honor for two decades as a Chaplain in the
United States Army Reserve and, after key assignments from Battalion to Division
level, retired with many military honors and the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in
1997; and
WHEREAS,
selected as a 2004 Historymaker and inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr.,
Board of Preachers of Morehouse College, he has contributed much to the Atlanta
community, serving on the Atlanta University Consortium Council of Presidents
and as a member of the Atlanta Rotary Club, 100 Black Men of Atlanta, and the
Historically Black Colleges and Universities Congressional Forum Steering
Committee in addition to holding positions on the boards of the Georgia Campaign
for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, the Atlanta Regional Council of Churches,
and the Atlanta Fulton Family Connection; and
WHEREAS,
under his excellent leadership and the steady guidance of his extensive
experience, foresight, and expertise, the ITC is working on the development and
implementation of a ten year strategic plan that will give a new and inspired
direction to the total operations of the institution by its 50th
anniversary.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in commending Dr. Michael A. Battle for his outstanding service to his community and his country and extend sincere best wishes for the continued success of his noble endeavors.
