RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life of Claxton Fire Chief Larry Rogers; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Fire Chief Rogers started his career when cited for running over a fire hose and
was ordered to attend a firefighter's drill and was "hooked"; and
WHEREAS,
Fire Chief Rogers took the job as full-time fire chief 23 years ago and gave
willingly of himself; and
WHEREAS,
Fire Chief Rogers supervised the city's dispatcher and more than 20 volunteer
firemen; and
WHEREAS,
Fire Chief Rogers took great responsibility and pride in his job and was well
received by his men; and
WHEREAS,
even on his last day on this earth, Fire Chief Rogers had given of himself,
wherein he fought three fires that day and was on his way to City Hall to
complete the paperwork; and
WHEREAS,
Fire Chief Rogers was a meticulous organizer and record keeper and very devoted
to his work; and
WHEREAS,
Fire Chief Rogers never left a stone unturned, all t's were crossed, all i's
were dotted; and
WHEREAS,
Fire Chief Rogers's dedication was uncanny, making himself available 24/7, he
would stay in touch at all times, even calling before leaving the house to check
on the department; and
WHEREAS,
Fire Chief Rogers's sudden death will definitely leave a void in the department
as well as the City of Claxton; and
WHEREAS,
Fire Chief Rogers was well-respected and honored and will be sorely missed; and
WHEREAS,
he was an Evans County native and lifelong resident and after joining the
department as a volunteer firefighter, he took the job of full-time fire chief
in August, 1981; and
WHEREAS,
he always pushed for better equipment for the fire department and last year
Claxton took delivery of a new fire engine funded from the special purpose sales
tax; and
WHEREAS,
he also led the Evans County Fire Defense Council, and had been appointed by the
Evans County Commission as its first time ever fire service coordinator; and
WHEREAS,
he had amassed a collection of model fire trucks, hats, and other fire-fighting
memorabilia that lined the shelves and walls of his office; and
WHEREAS,
Chief Rogers's passions were his family, the Lord, and firefighting;
and
WHEREAS,
Chief Rogers leaves behind his wife, Patsy Brewton Rogers, his daughter, Shelly
Brinkley, and his grandson, Seth Brinkley, the "apple of his eye."
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body honor the
life of Claxton Fire Chief Larry Rogers and express their condolences to his
family upon his untimely passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to his wife, Patsy Brewton
Rogers.
