RESOLUTION
Recognizing
the Elliott Family as the First Family of NASCAR in Georgia; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Elliott Family´s proud tradition of racing began in Dawsonville under
the tutelage and guiding hand of George Elliott; and
WHEREAS,
owning his own race cars and a race track in Georgia, Mr. Elliott had been
involved with racing since the 1950´s and bestowed upon his children his
passion and enthusiasm for this exciting sport; and
WHEREAS,
George and Mildred Elliott always took an active role in their children´s
lives, supporting their dreams and establishing the Elliott Family´s 50
year relationship with NASCAR; and
WHEREAS,
George´s young son Bill began to demonstrate at an early age a natural
skill and competitive racing instinct at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock;
and
WHEREAS,
in 1976, at the tender age of 20, and with the support of his parents and
siblings, Bill Elliott entered his first Winston Cup race and launched a career
that would span decades and include two Daytona 500 victories, the first win of
the Winston million, the Daytona Speed record, and the world land speed record
set at Talladega; and
WHEREAS,
Awesome Bill from Dawsonville, a modest, unassuming, and unpretentious man, has
become a household name in NASCAR racing and has been selected Most Popular
Driver an unprecedented 16 times, Georgia Professional Athlete of the Year
twice, National Motorsports Driver of the Year 14 times, and in 1998, was
inducted in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS,
his brother, Ernie Elliott, built and continues to build the powerful engines
that put this remarkable family on the fast track to fame and served for 15
years as the crew chief of this much admired team; and
WHEREAS,
Dan Elliott lent his skills and expertise as a member of the pit crew and worked
with his brothers on their amazing cars; and
WHEREAS,
the success of the Elliott Family is built upon teamwork and the close bonds of
these loyal and hard-working brothers who have set an enviable and valuable
example to all of Georgia´s families; and
WHEREAS,
it is virtually impossible to list all of the honors and awards this family has
garnered over the course of their amazing NASCAR legacy, but perhaps their most
acclaimed accomplishment is the support, love, and respect of racing
fans.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
the Elliott Family for their outstanding contributions to the sport of racing
and recognize them as the First Family of NASCAR in Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Elliott Family.
