Senate Resolution 36

A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending Dr. Priscilla D. Thomas for her many years of community service and her outstanding civic achievements; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Priscilla D. Thomas has dedicated her life to serving her native Savannah community; and

WHEREAS, early on, Dr. Thomas displayed the leadership determination that has become a hallmark of her career, organizing the first Brownie troop and 4-H Club in Garden City under the guidance of her grandparents and becoming an active member of FairLawn Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, during her more than 30 years in education, Dr. Thomas was a much loved and esteemed teacher and principal who contributed greatly to improving the quality of education for her many students; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas is a true and ardent youth advocate who founded the Youth Commission of Chatham County and its annual "Summer Bonanza Partnership, Inc.," a program designed to keep children off the streets through community involvement; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas has made history as the first African American woman to serve as vice chair of the Chatham County Commission and, through her great energy and innovative ideas, has earned a reputation as a champion of those most in need; and

WHEREAS, as she has been an exceptionally talented television producer and hostess, an unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement, and a distinguished community leader, it is highly fitting that this body recognize her many outstanding accomplishments.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in recognizing and commending Dr. Priscilla D. Thomas for her many years of distinguished service to the citizens of Savannah and the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Priscilla D. Thomas.
