Senate Resolution 308

A RESOLUTION

Honoring the memory of Col. William G. Gustafson, USA (Ret.), and expressing regret at his passing; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, news of the passing of Col. William G. Gustafson, USA (Ret.), is received with deep regret by this body; and

WHEREAS, the life led by this distinguished officer and gentleman rendered his name dear to the hearts of his family and fellow citizens alike; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of The Citadel, Col. Gustafson was a highly decorated officer in the U.S. Army during his 30 years of active duty, serving two tours of duty in the Vietnam War and later as the Director of Management in the Office Chief of Staff of the Army; other highlights of his career included attendance at the coronation of the Shah of Iran, presentations to members of the British House of Commons in Windsor Castle, UK, lecturing at the Australian Army General Staff in Canberra, Australia, and being listed in "Who's Who" in Washington D.C.; and

WHEREAS, Col. Gustafson also served three terms as chairman of the Cobb County Republican Party from 1991 to 1997 and served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1992; he was a close advisor to many Georgia politicians including Newt Gingrich, Bob Barr, Johnny Isakson, Chuck Clay, and others and was instrumental in recruiting and growing the party base with the objective of electing Republicans by starting the popular Republican breakfast held at Vittles Restaurant whose guest speakers included John McCain and Dick Cheney; and

WHEREAS, a memorial service will be held at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, 4385 Lower Roswell Road, Marietta, Georgia, on Saturday, March 5, 2005, at 1:00 p.m.; followed by a graveside burial service with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C., on Monday, April 4th, 2005, at 12:30 p.m.; and
WHEREAS, while in life he commanded the esteem of his fellow citizens, in his death we mingle our sympathies with the grief of his family and friends.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body honor the memory of Col. William G. Gustafson, USA (Ret.), and express their regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Col. William G. Gustafson, USA (Ret.).
