A RESOLUTION

Commending The Links, Inc. and its Links Day at the Capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, founded in 1946 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, The Links, Incorporated is a not-for-profit organization with 274 chapters nationwide comprised of more than 10,000 women of color committed to enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the identities, culture, and economic survival of all people of African origin; and

WHEREAS, Links Day at the Capitol will take place on Friday, February 25, 2005, and is a project of the Southern Area of The Links, which consists of 2,500 members in 75 chapters throughout the South; and

WHEREAS, in each state throughout the South, The Links, Inc. is traveling to their respective capitals to ask for the elimination of health disparities among those most vulnerable; and

WHEREAS, Healthy People 2010 legislation is an initiative that promotes health objectives designed to identify the most significant preventable threats to health and will establish national goals to reduce these threats; and

WHEREAS, Healthy People 2010 concentrates on infant mortality, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV infections/AIDS, and immunizations; and

WHEREAS, in Georgia, this much needed effort is being coordinated by the Magnolia Chapter of The Links and state project coordinator Dora McDonald.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body recognizes The Links, Inc. as an extremely valuable organization and commends its work to improve the lives of those who need the most assistance and to reduce the growing health disparities within our state.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dora McDonald.
