A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
and congratulating Flat Rock AME Church; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Flat Rock AME Church, the oldest black church in Fayette County, celebrated its
150th anniversary on Sunday, August 22, 2004; and
WHEREAS,
Flat Rock AME Church was founded in 1854 on the Spear's Plantation, known at
that time as Scufflefield, through hard work, dedication, and commitment of the
founding fathers and mothers to proliferate Christianity; and
WHEREAS,
the church was located on land that is the present site of Ebenezer United
Methodist Church on Ebenezer Road; and
WHEREAS,
the members of Scufflefield and Ebenezer United Methodist Church agreed to
exchange land so the church could be relocated; and
WHEREAS,
after the relocation to 148 Old Chapel Lane in Fayetteville, Georgia, the church
was named Flat Rock AME Church; and
WHEREAS,
it has served the black community in Fayette County as a church and as a school
which accommodated as many as 100 students; and
WHEREAS,
Flat Rock AME Church was instrumental in developing several other churches
including Edgefield Baptist Church, Little Vine Baptist Church, and Wilkes Grove
Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS,
it is only fitting and proper that the rich history, many accomplishments, and
outstanding contributions of Flat Rock AME Church be recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
congratulate Flat Rock AME Church in Fayetteville, Georgia, on the occasion of
its 150th anniversary, commend the church for the tremendous impact it has had
on the community while sharing God's blessings with others, and extend best
wishes for continued growth and service to the community.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and
directed to transmit an appropriate copy to Flat Rock AME Church.
