A
RESOLUTION
Commemorating
the 200th anniversary of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
on December 13, 2006, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating
its bicentennial anniversary at its 200th Annual Meeting; and
WHEREAS,
this venerable Savannah organization is the first chamber of commerce created in
Georgia and the seventh oldest chamber in the United States; and
WHEREAS,
for 200 memorable years, the chamber has tirelessly worked to facilitate
commerce and to improve the quality of life of all the citizens of Savannah;
and
WHEREAS,
the chamber was formed in 1806 to address the dangers of transporting goods
across the Atlantic because of hostilities between Great Britain and France
during the Napoleonic Wars; and
WHEREAS,
today, the chamber devotes its efforts to providing quality customer service and
programs to meet the needs of its members, improve the economic environment of
its community, and build a legacy of leadership for generations to come;
and
WHEREAS,
over the years, the chamber has been instrumental in many successes for the
city, including the extension of the Savannah Harbor in 1912, bringing what is
now called Hunter Army Airfield to Savannah, numerous beautification projects
and campaigns, and the creation of the United Way, Savannah Technical College,
the Savannah Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Savannah Better Business
Bureau, and Leadership Savannah, the second oldest leadership program in the
country; and
WHEREAS,
for two centuries, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce has faithfully served
the citizens of its community, and it is abundantly fitting and proper for this
body to pay tribute to its many invaluable accomplishments on the occasion of
this milestone anniversary.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce and
in thanking this outstanding organization for its 200 years of exemplary service
to the beautiful city of Savannah.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Savannah Area Chamber
of Commerce.
