A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mrs. Evelyn G. Lowery for her contributions as a community
activist; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Lowery participated in the Selma-Montgomery March in 1965 and has
continuously put her well-being and liberty at risk, standing up for what she
believes in; and
WHEREAS,
she founded the
SCLC/Womeńs
Organizational Movement for Equality Now (W.O.M.E.N.), Inc., which champions the
rights of women, children, families, and the impoverished community;
and
WHEREAS,
through SCLC/ W.O.M.E.N., Inc., she has helped to create the Empowerment
Training Center for GED/Computer Training and the Girls to Women Bridging the
Gap Mentoring Program and has awarded over $350,000.00 in scholarships to high
school seniors through oratorical contests; and
WHEREAS,
she has helped to establish the Toy Gun Exchange and the national Stop the
Killing Quilt, made of pictures memorializing youth killed violently;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Lowery has dedicated her life to creating a better, more equal society that
creates opportunity for all.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
and commend Mrs. Evelyn G. Lowery for all her contributions as an activist in
pursuit of civil rights.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Evelyn G. Lowery.
