Senate Resolution 1246

A RESOLUTION

Commending Ms. Brenda Wood; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Ms. Brenda Wood, an anchorwoman for 11Alive News, is one of Atlanta's most trusted and beloved television journalists; and

WHEREAS, a summa cum laude graduate of Loma Linda University in Southern California, Ms. Wood began her broadcast career in 1977 at WAAY-TV in Huntsville, Alabama, where, after briefly leaving the station to work at WSM-TV in Nashville, Tennessee, she became an anchor; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Wood later spent eight years as an anchor for WMC-TV in Memphis, Tennessee, before moving to Atlanta and joining the news team at WAGA-TV in 1988; and

WHEREAS, the primary anchor for WAGA-TV for more than eight years, Ms. Wood joined the 11Alive News Team in September, 1997, and today anchors the station's weekday broadcasts at 6, 7, and 11 p.m.; and

WHEREAS, during the course of her distinguished career, Ms. Wood has gained the respect and admiration of viewers in every market she has served and has received numerous accolades, including 13 Emmy awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, five awards from the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists, and two awards from the Georgia Association of Broadcasters; and

WHEREAS, she has also received the NAACP's Phoenix Award for "Best News Anchor" and received the National Association of Black Journalists award for Community Affairs Programming for co-producing and hosting "Journeys with Brenda Wood," among many other recognitions; and

WHEREAS, outside of her demanding career, Ms. Wood, a devoted wife and mother of two, is a faithful member of her church and an active member of the Atlanta community who takes time to speak to school groups, church congregations, and civic organizations on a variety of subjects, including journalism and the importance of education; and

WHEREAS, as Women's History Month, March, 2006, is set aside to celebrate and honor those women who have contributed their time and talents to the betterment of this state and nation, it is only fitting and proper that Ms. Wood's invaluable contributions to journalism be appropriately recognized during this special time.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join to commend Ms. Brenda Wood for her outstanding efforts to keep the residents of Atlanta knowledgeable and informed and to thank her for her many contributions to Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Brenda Wood.
