A RESOLUTION

Expressing regret at the passing of Dr. Willie Grier Todd; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on February 28, 2006, the State of Georgia lost one of its finest and most distinguished citizens with the passing of Dr. Willie Grier Todd at 97 years of age; and

WHEREAS, known by many as the "Matriarch of Guyton," Dr. Todd received her Ph.D. in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, served as educational director for the Griffin Baptist Church, and was active in the Baptist Association; and

WHEREAS, she was a charter member of the Pine Street Baptist Church of Guyton and was a very active civic leader in Effingham County, and especially her hometown of Guyton; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Todd taught at Tift College and then Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, where she retired in 1976; and

WHEREAS, prior to her college teaching career, she taught school in Pineora, Tusculum and Guyton Academy and High School in Springfield; and

WHEREAS, as a strong advocate for historical preservation, Dr. Todd was instrumental in founding the Effingham County and Guyton Historical societies as well as the Annual Guyton "Tour of Homes," which is held in December of each year; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Todd was active in getting Guyton designated as a national historic district; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Todd was a woman of many talents as evident by her writing of the alma mater for Effingham County High School and the beautiful gardens she maintained; and

WHEREAS, the passing of this great Georgian leaves an unfillable void in the hearts and lives of her family and friends who will miss her amazing energy, her great sense of civic responsibility, her phenomenal ability to make everyone she met feel special, and most of all her love and support.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body express their deepest and most sincere regret at the passing of Dr. Willie Grier Todd, a great woman, educator, and civic leader.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Dr. Willie Grier Todd.
