RESOLUTION
Commending
Upshaw C. Bentley, Jr.; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Upshaw C. Bentley, Jr., of Fortson, Bentley & Griffin was honored as the
recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the midyear meeting of the State
Bar of Georgia on January 5, 2006; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Bentley has devoted his entire life to the service of others and has done so
in an effective, energetic manner, seeking to benefit his fellow citizens
rather than to garner glory for himself; and
WHEREAS,
his life has been a shining example of political, charitable, religious, and
civic involvement that has inspired many others by example; and
WHEREAS,
he has served as president of the Northeast Georgia Boy Scout Council; president
of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce; mayor of Athens, Georgia; emeritus
trustee of the University of Georgia Foundation; trustee of the Georgia Baptist
Foundation; chairman of the board of trustees of Truett-McConnell College;
chairman of the board of deacons of the First Baptist Church of Athens; and
co-chairman of the Athens community Council on Aging; and
WHEREAS,
the actions he has taken have made a positive impact upon every citizen of
Athens-Clarke County for the last six decades, and there are very few
individuals who have played a more important role in all aspects of the
development of the Athens-Clarke County Community; and
WHEREAS,
in all that he is and all that he does, Mr. Bentley truly sets a higher bar for
the rest of us; therefore it is abundantly fitting and proper that the
outstanding accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately
recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Upshaw C. Bentley, Jr., for significant contributions and service as a
community leader and outstanding citizen for Athens-Clarke County and Georgia;
and recognize him as the duly deserving recipient of the Lifetime Achievement
Award.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Upshaw C. Bentley, Jr.
