RESOLUTION
Recognizing
March 16, 2006, as Columbus Day at the Capitol; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Georgia has been very blessed to have had the wonderful City of Columbus in its
midst for over 175 years; and
WHEREAS,
at the direction of the Georgia Legislature, Columbus was founded on the east
bank of the Chattahoochee River and chartered as a city in 1828;
and
WHEREAS,
a textile center for most of its history until the 1970s, Columbus is today home
the world headquarters of Aflac, TSYS credit card processing, Synovus Banking,
Carmike Cinemas, Japanese battery manufacturing company MBIA, Pratt &
Whitney, and numerous other thriving businesses; and
WHEREAS,
in 1971, the former City of Columbus and Muscogee County consolidated to form
the Columbus Consolidated Government, the first such government in Georgia and
then one of only a handful in the nation; and
WHEREAS,
Columbus is a center for the arts, with the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts,
the Springer Opera House (Georgia's Official State Theatre), and Columbus State
University's music, art, and theater campuses all clustered in the city's Uptown
area; and
WHEREAS,
what most makes this city so special is its diverse, value-minded citizens, who
are proud of Columbus's rich heritage and great promise for the
future.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
recognizing March 16, 2006, as Columbus Day at the Capitol.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Honorable Bob Poydasheff,
Mayor of Columbus.
