A RESOLUTION

Commending Ms. Jane Fonda; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Ms. Jane Fonda, a resident of Atlanta, Georgia, has touched countless lives with her compassion, generosity, and commitment to making the world a better place for generations to come; and

WHEREAS, the daughter of screen legend Henry Fonda and Frances Seymour Fonda, Ms. Fonda is one of America's most gifted thespians, and her impressive body of work has earned her numerous accolades, including two Oscars for Best Actress (for Klute in 1971 and Coming Home in 1978) and an Emmy for her performance in The Dollmaker; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Fonda's credits include Coming Home, The China Syndrome, Nine to Five, Rollover, On Golden Pond, and The Morning After, among many memorable roles; and

WHEREAS, in the 1980s, Ms. Fonda revolutionized the fitness industry with the production of 23 home exercise videos, 13 audio recordings, and five books, selling a combined total of 16 million copies; her original video, Jane Fonda's Workout, is to this day the top grossing home video of all time; and

WHEREAS, today, Ms. Fonda devotes her time and talents to working for social change and is especially passionate about improving the lives of women and girls; and

WHEREAS, she is the founder and chairwoman of the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (G-CAPP), a state-wide effort to reduce the rates of teenage pregnancies in Georgia through community, youth, and family development, sustainable economic growth, and legislative advocacy; and

WHEREAS, her tremendous generosity has resulted in the Jane Fonda Center for Adolescent Reproductive Health at the Emory School of Medicine and has endowed the Marion Howard Chair in Adolescent Reproductive Health in the school's Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics; and

WHEREAS, a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund, Ms. Fonda has diligently worked to forge a better future for women across the globe, and in 2000 traveled to Nigeria to produce a film in partnership with the International Women's Health Coalition, entitled "Generation 2000: Changing Girls' Realities"; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Fonda is a member of the Women & Foreign Policy Advisory Committee of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Grady Health System Board of Visitors, the Screen Actors Guild Advisory Board, the Advisory Board of the Native American Rights Fund, and the V-Counsel of V-Day: Until the Violence Stops; and

WHEREAS, Georgia is very fortunate to be the home of such an extraordinary lady.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in commending Ms. Jane Fonda for a lifetime of service to humanity and thank her for her many contributions to Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Jane Fonda.
