Senate Resolution 1121

A RESOLUTION

Commending Deputy Sheriff Steven Jones; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, since 1993, the citizens of Thomas County have been very fortunate to be served by one of Georgia's finest law enforcement officers, Deputy Sheriff Steven Jones of the Thomas County Sheriff's Department; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Jones is a graduate of Thomas College, where he received an Associate of Science degree in criminal justice and an Associate of Arts degree in business, and of Valdosta State University, where he received a bachelor of business administration degree in marketing; and

WHEREAS, during the course of his tenure with the Thomas County Sheriff's Department, Deputy Jones has served this South Georgia community with integrity and determination, and he has been especially devoted to promoting the safety and well-being of local young people through his involvement with D.A.R.E.; and

WHEREAS, D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is a world renowned program dedicated to giving children the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence through a police officer-led series of classroom lessons; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Jones has taught and graduated 14 D.A.R.E. elementary groups, helping the youth of Thomas County to reach their maximum potential by teaching them how to live productive, drug-free lives; and

WHEREAS, in his service to the community, Deputy Jones has also coordinated neighborhood watch groups, conducted alcohol and drug awareness programs for five years, earned accreditation as a child safety seat technician, and orchestrated a school safety plan for the Thomas County School System; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his commitment to serving the citizens, especially the children, of his county and state, Deputy Jones has been named the 2005 D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join to commend Deputy Sheriff Steven Jones on his many important contributions to law enforcement in Georgia and congratulate him on being named the 2005 D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Deputy Sheriff Steven Jones.
