A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon on its 50th Anniversary;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon was established in 1956 and has long
been recognized for its service to a regional audience of all ages and interests
and as a community resource for lifelong learning and enrichment which seeks to
engage its visitors, evoke wonder, stimulate curiosity, and open minds to new
worlds of discovery; and
WHEREAS,
the Museum of Arts and Sciences hosts upwards of 100,000 visitors each year,
25,000 of whom are school children from 50 central Georgia counties;
and
WHEREAS,
the Museum of Arts and Sciences occupies a modern 45,000 square foot brick
building on 14 acres of wooded land in midtown Macon which includes a lobby,
museum store, four galleries with changing exhibits, a 118 seat planetarium, the
Discovery House and Back Yard, a classroom, an independently climatized
collection storage vault, a 149 seat auditorium, office space, and staff work
areas; and
WHEREAS,
on the grounds of the Museum of Arts and Sciences are an early twentieth century
cabin used by Macon author Harry Stillwell Edwards, a caboose, an observatory,
and picnic grounds and nature trails; and
WHEREAS,
the Museum of Arts and Sciences is Georgia's largest institution devoted to the
arts and sciences; and
WHEREAS,
the exemplary work of this fine institution is worthy of recognition and
commendation as it celebrates its 50th Anniversary.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
and commend the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon for its outstanding work in
educating and enriching the lives of the citizens of this state for 50
years.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Museum of Arts and
Sciences.
