RESOLUTION
Commending
Mrs. Juanita Jones Abernathy; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
during the course of her highly eventful life, Mrs. Juanita Jones Abernathy has
touched countless lives throughout the world with her message of hope,
empowerment, and justice; and
WHEREAS,
a native of Uniontown, Alabama, Mrs. Abernathy received her elementary and high
school education from the famed boarding school, Selma University, and later
received a Bachelor of Science in business education from Tennessee State
University; and
WHEREAS,
she is a former high school teacher and a successful businesswoman who for
nearly two decades served as a senior sales director for Mary Kay Cosmetics;
and
WHEREAS,
as the widow of Rev. Dr. Ralph David Abernathy, the closest associate to Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., Mrs. Abernathy has lived through many trying ordeals,
including the bombing of her home and the numerous arrests of her husband, that
she always handled with the utmost courage, grace, and determination;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Abernathy's involvement with the civil rights movement has taken her all
over the globe as she has fervently worked to promote liberty and equality for
all individuals in the United States and abroad; and
WHEREAS,
she continues to be very active in the community through her work with a number
of civic and religious organizations, including as a member and secretary of the
Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, as a
member and treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Fulton County Development
Authority, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Morehouse School of
Religion, the Board of Directors of the Atlanta-Fulton County League of Women
Voters, the Citizen Panel Review Board for the Development of Family and
Children Services, and the Board of Directors for the Ralph David Abernathy
Towers and Ralph David Abernathy Foundation; and
WHEREAS,
as Women's History Month, March, 2006, is set aside to celebrate and honor those
women who have contributed their time and talents to the betterment of this
state and nation, it is only fitting and proper that Mrs. Abernathy be
recognized at this special time.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
commending Mrs. Juanita Jones Abernathy on her lifetime of brave and noble
service to humanity and thank her for her many outstanding contributions to
Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Juanita Jones
Abernathy.
