By: Senators Miles of the 43rd, Butler of the 55th, Henson of the 41st, Thompson of the 5th, Adelman of the 42nd and others

A RESOLUTION

Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the City of Lithonia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, this year, the City of Lithonia will be celebrating its sesquicentennial anniversary, marking 150 years of rich heritage; and

WHEREAS, before being granted a charter by the General Assembly of Georgia on March 5, 1856, Lithonia began as a small community formed at the intersection of two roads in the eastern part of DeKalb County, known as Cross Roads; in 1845, the Georgia Railroad completed a rail project that traversed Cross Roads, furthering the area's growth into a town; and

WHEREAS, tradition has it that a local private school teacher gave the community the name of Lithonia by combining the Greek words Lithos (rock) and Onia (place), in recognition of the three nearby granite mountains and abundance of flat rock; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Lithonia has grown from a tiny town of about 250 in 1861 to becoming a major suburb of metropolitan Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, throughout its history, the City of Lithonia has had a unique personality all its own, and Georgia has been very blessed to have this vibrant community in its midst for 150 years.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the City of Lithonia and express their very best wishes for many more years of prosperity for this treasure of DeKalb County.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Honorable Darold Peter Honore', Jr., Mayor of Lithonia.
